ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The National Organization for Victim Assistance® (NOVA), a nonprofit
organization committed to the recognition and implementation of victim
rights and services, has announced an Identity Theft Victim Advocate
Summit will be held in Columbus, Ohio on April 27, 2010. In response to
the rising tide of identity theft victimization throughout the country,
NOVA has recognized a lack of education directed to victim advocates,
those individuals working directly with victims on a regular basis.

“We recognize there is a large gap in the education related to identity
theft,” said Will Marling, Executive Director of NOVA. “While we see a
great deal of education supporting consumers before they are victimized,
we have been presented with a tremendous opportunity to bring together
victim advocates to develop a set of best practices that will not only
serve victims but can be a blueprint for victim advocacy moving forward.”

NOVA’s Identity Theft Victim Advocate Summit is a training course
designed to provide crime victim advocates with the most current tools
available to assist the millions of victims of identity theft. A recent
report from Javelin Strategy Research revealed that an estimated 11
million Americans were victims of identity fraud in 2009 (“2010 Identity
Fraud Survey Report”). In order to further aid consumers in dealing with
identity theft issues that they face every day, NOVA established the
Identity Theft Task Force in 2009. Chaired by the Honorable Chief
Justice Richard Barajas, NOVA’s Identity Theft Task Force is working to
address critical issues of the crime and develop a set of best practices
for victim advocates across the nation.

“We are proud to be aligned with an organization such as NOVA,” said
Todd Davis, Chairman and CEO of LifeLock, the leader in identity theft
protection. “We want consumers to know that not only are there various
ways to help combat this crime, but there are organizations who will do
whatever it takes to assist victims. We need to see other agencies going
to bat for consumers like NOVA has done.”

MICHAEL Foot, the former Labour leader and ex-MP for Ebbw Vale, died at the age of 96 last week. Mr Foot represented Ebbw Vale in parliament after a by-election in 1960, following in the footsteps of his great political mentor Aneurin Bevan. He served the South Wales valleys constitutency, which became the Blaenau Gwent seat, for 32 years. Here Chris McLaughlin, editor of Tribune and former political editor of the Sunday Mirror, remembers him. THERE is an abiding image of Michael Foot which no camera could ever capture but which captures the essence of the man.

Many vacant commercial properties in the UK may have inadequate Commercial Property Insurance despite facing a significantly increased risk of arson and malicious damage. Following similar warnings from the UKs largest insurance group, Aviva, the independent commercial insurance broker, Flint Insurance, is urging owners of empty properties to remember the importance of Commercial Insurance during these financially challenging times.

Latest research from the Local Data Company shows that the worst affected areas of the UK are experiencing a level of empty commercial properties that is hitting a 24 per cent high. The UK average for empty commercial properties is currently 12 per cent. The Local Data Companys research is representative of 92 per cent of the UK, covering more than 390,000 retail and leisure premises.

Inadequate commercial insurance can lead to financial loss for the owners of empty properties if they fall prey to acts of vandalism; furthermore, failure to inform an insurance provider that a commercial property is empty could invalidate a property owners insurance. Owners of vacant properties must also ensure that their buildings are adequately insured in response to wider legal concerns, as identified by a property risk manager for Aviva, who said:

“Empty units must be adequately protected – every year, over three million properties are vandalised and 25 per cent of this malicious damage occurs in empty properties with arson costing Pounds Sterling 2 billion”.

ROY Hodgsons iron-man players must now add another match to their marathon season. This was the 45th game his Fulham side have fought their way through and all it brought them was another replay to squeeze into a crowded schedule.
As we know – because theyre always telling us – rocks superstars are feeling the pinch. Faced with a global slump in album sales and the not-unconnected problem of illegal downloading, theyve embarked on an increasingly desperate search for the industrys new Holy Grail. a business model that can make money from music while accommodating the iPod generations unwillingness to pay for it. Its a circle that cant easily be squared, though there have been some imaginative attempts to date. A few months later, Radiohead leaked their new album In Rainbows onto the internet, asking fans to pay only what they thought it was worth. Over one million people coughed up something. The deluxe vinyl version, released two months later, went on to become the best-selling release of 2008. and that in a vinyl market in which sales rose 89% on the previous year. Next weekend, the Kingdom of Fife enters the story when King Creosote – also known as 43-year-old musician Kenny Anderson – performs at Anstruthers Homegame festival. Anderson isnt a rock superstar but, like Prince, hes giving away a free album and performing a series of connected live shows. The difference is that his audience will have to record this album for themselves. Now in its seventh year, Homegame is organised by Fence Records, the label Anderson founded in the mid-1990s and which he now runs with fellow musician Johnny Lynch. Together they are part of a wider community of musicians known as the Fence Collective.

BOTHELL, Wash. — EKOS Corporation announced today that Dr. David W. Newell, Co–Executive
Director, Swedish Neuroscience Institute (SNI, Seattle, WA) presented a
SNI clinical study known as ‘SLEUTH’ (Safety of Lysis with Ultrasound in
the Treatment of Intracerebral (ICH) and Intraventricular Hemorrhage
(IVH) at the American Heart Association International Stroke Conference
(San Antonio, TX).

Dr. Newell said, “The objective of this study was to evaluate the safety
and efficacy of a novel therapy which combines ultrasound with
recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA) delivered through a
microcatheter directly into spontaneous IVH or ICH in humans, to
facilitate evacuation of the hemorrhage.”

Dr. Newell said that the 35 patients presented at SNI with ICH and IVH
were screened between November 2008 and July 2009 for entry into the
study. Entry criteria included the spontaneous onset of ICH ≥ 25cc and
or IVH producing ventricular obstruction. Nine patients (ages 38-83,
average = 63, 6 male, 3 female) who met entry criteria were consented
and entered into the trial. A ventricular drainage catheter and an
ultrasound microcatheter were stereotactically delivered together,
directly into the IVH or ICH. Recombinant tissue plasminogen activator
(rt-PA) and 24 hours of continuous ultrasound were delivered and gravity
drainage was performed. In patients with IVH a total of 3 mg of rt-PA
was injected, and in patients with intraparenchymal hemorrhages a total
of 0.9 mg rt-PA was injected, in three doses over 24 hours.

Dr. Newell reported that all patients had significant volume reductions
of the treated hemorrhage. The mean percentage volume reduction after 24
hours of treatment, compared to the pre-treatment stability scans, as
determined by CT were 59 % ± 5 (sem) for ICH, and 45.1% ±13 (sem) for
IVH (1 ICH patient was excluded from analysis due to catheter breakage).
There were no intracranial infections and there were no significant
episodes of re-bleeding by clinical or CT assessment. There was 1 death
by 30 days after admission. Clinical improvements as determined by a
decrease in the National Institutes of Health Stroke Score (NIHSS) were
demonstrated at 30 days in 7/9 patients. The rate of thrombolysis was
compared between 8 patients who completed treatment, to cohorts of
patients treated using identical doses of tPA and catheter drainage
without ultrasound for IVH and ICH (courtesy of MISTIE and CLEAR studies
which are large IVH/ICH studies sponsored by the NIH which are already
underway and do no use ultrasound acceleration ). Compared to MISTIE /
CLEAR data we observed a faster rate of lysis during the first 24 hours
of treatment for IVH (p=0.046) and for ICH (p=0.074) in the patients
treated with sonolysis tPA.

Dr. Newell noted, “Lysis and drainage of spontaneous ICH and IVH with
reduction of mass effect can be accomplished rapidly and safely by
sonothrombolysis using stereotactically delivered drainage and
ultrasound catheters through a burr hole. A larger clinical trial with
catheters specifically designed for brain blood clot removal is
warranted.”

SAN ANSELMO, Calif. — San Domenico School’s Orchestra da Camera returned from competing
in the 2010 National Orchestra Festival® competition with two new
trophies in tow: First Place High School String Orchestra, and Festival
Grand Champion. The festival, sponsored by the American String Teachers
Association (ASTA), took place in Santa Clara, California as part of
ASTA’s national conference on February 18 – 20. This marked the third
time in six years that the orchestra, comprised of students in San
Domenico’s elite Virtuoso Program for talented teenage musicians, has
been invited to compete and returned as winners, having taken home the
same trophies at their appearances at the festival in 2008 and 2005.

The Orchestra da Camera’s public competition performance took
place at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 19, 2010 before a panel of judges
and a standing-room only audience. Virtuoso Program Music Director
George Thomson remarked that among the more gratifying aspects of the
Festival this time was that the Virtuoso Program competition
performance–usually only attended by family, friends, and a smattering
of spectators–was packed, with standees, even. “The word was out that
the girls from California were the group to hear,” Thomson said.

Competing orchestras are split into four categories: High School String
Orchestra, High School Full Orchestra, Youth Orchestra, and Middle
School Orchestra. The Orchestra da Camera competed in the High
School String Orchestra category, performing a public concert that was
evaluated by a panel of music educators on their technique, tone
quality, intonation, rhythm and interpretation. Students also attended
masterclasses, where they performed for and listened to fellow student
musicians from other participating orchestras from around the country.
The festival culminated in a Gala Awards Dinner Dance for all of the
orchestra students, where ratings and prizes were announced for each
category and the Virtuoso Program’s Orchestra da Camera was named
Grand Champion Orchestra.

Besides their National Orchestra Festival successes, the orchestra has
received numerous awards and recognitions in recent years, including
performing on NPR’s From the Top in front of a sold-out audience at
Stanford University in 2006, and hosting several renowned performers for
guest artist masterclasses including Yehudi Menuhin, Franco Gulli and
the Cavani String Quartet.

The Virtuoso Program was established 1977 by San Domenico School to
offer a highly advanced curriculum of music and academic training for
talented high school string players from Marin County and the greater
Bay Area.

LAKEWOOD, Colo. — General Moly (NYSE Amex: GMO)(TSX: GMO) announced a significant
investment and strategic relationship with Hanlong (USA) Mining
Investment Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sichuan Hanlong Group
(Hanlong), that is anticipated to provide full project funding for the
Company’s 80% owned Mt. Hope project.

Highlights of the transaction include:

Mr. Hansen added, “We would also like to express our appreciation to
POSCO, our Joint Venture partner at Mt. Hope, for its immense support as
we have evaluated numerous financing alternatives and its commitment to
remain a 20% partner in the Mt. Hope project.”

Chartwell Seniors Housing Real Estate Investment Trust (TSX: CSH.UN) announced today results for the three months and year ended December 31, 2009.

2009 HIGHLIGHTS:

Same property net operating income (”NOI”) decreased $0.3 million or 0.7% for the quarter ended December 31, 2009 compared to the same period last year. For the year ended December 31, 2009 same property NOI decreased $0.9 million or 0.5% compared to last year. The implementation of rent increases on renewal and turnover, increased ancillary revenues, and targeted cost reductions partially offset the negative impact of reduced occupancies, property and commodity tax increases, and a one-time increase in vacation and benefit cost estimates compared to the prior year. Same property occupancy was 91.8% in the fourth quarter of 2009, up 0.5 percentage points from the previous quarter of 2009 but down from 93.1% in last years fourth quarter. For the year ended December 31, 2009 same property occupancy was 91.6% compared to 93.3% in the prior year.

In the Canadian Retirement portfolio same property NOI decreased $1.0 million or 4.3% for the quarter ended December 31, 2009 compared to the same period last year. For the year ended December 31, 2009 same property NOI decreased $1.8 million or 1.8% compared to last year. The NOI declines are primarily attributable to lower occupancies, particularly in the British Columbia portfolio, as well as one-time increases in estimated liabilities for employee vacation and benefits recorded in the fourth quarter of 2009. Same property occupancies in Ontario were healthy at 93.1% in the fourth quarter of 2009, up from 92.1% in the third quarter of the year and lower than 94.1% in the fourth quarter of last year. Customer traffic and expected future arrivals maintained positive trends and management is optimistic that this improvement will translate into continued increases in occupancies in 2010. In addition, the spillover effect from significant waiting lists for long-term care beds in the province should continue supporting the increased demand for retirement suites. Performance in the Quebec portfolio continues to show steady growth with same property average occupancy improving to 88.6% in the fourth quarter of 2009, up from 87.8% in the third quarter of 2009 and from 85.5% in the fourth quarter of last year. In Western Canada, while Alberta occupancies remained strong, continued oversupply conditions in two British Columbia markets, combined with reduced occupancies at one long-term care community, resulted in same property occupancies declining to 90.3% in the fourth quarter of 2009 from 91.0% in the third quarter of 2009 and 95.0% in the fourth quarter of the prior year.

Cinema possesses a rich history of collaboration between artists of sound, narrative, and image. However, traditional tendencies to perceive music as a strictly supportive background or accompaniment have been subjected to in-depth critique only recently. Abigail Childs interactions with musicians in Is This What You Were Born For? (1981-89) and Bill Morrisons partnership with composer Michael Gordon in Decasia (2001) exemplify (but by no means exhaust the possibilities of) the broader range of collaborative textures that cinema has always suggested. Not coincidentally, these works represent the influence on cinema of two popular music practices: the ubiquitous re-mixing that has emerged from hip-hop culture and the group composition typical of many rock bands. Abigail Child (also a poet, critic, and scholar) has had an influential career as an experimental filmmaker since the mid-1970s when she turned from professional documentary work to the creation of independent films focusing on gender, sexuality, class, and the critical possibilities of montage. Recycling found footage from a wide variety of sources, such as porn, industrial films, and home movies, and progressing cinematic techniques often associated primarily with the historical avant-garde of the early twentieth century, Child has created an oeuvre of incredible beauty and continuing social relevance. Her films are shown at major art museums and in experimental cinema venues and can be obtained through a variety of distribution channels. Is This What You Were Born For?, the series of short films Child created in the 1980s, underscores her exploration of interdisciplinary collaboration and these endeavors have had on her work. Michael Gordons award-winning career as a composer has resulted in a variety of notable intermedia collaborations, including for example operas with diegetic film components progressing beyond the more familiar application of projection as scenery and non-narrative music performances incorporating video. Gordon is a founding member of the highly regarded new music organization Bang on a Can, a group dedicated to facilitating the composition and performance of new music, often with an interdisciplinary dimension and independently of conservative academic contexts. Decasia, Gordons internationally celebrated collaboration with filmmaker Bill Morrison, is a symphony for full orchestra paired with a montage of archival nitrate footage in various states of intriguing and evocative decomposition. The final version of the film, edited to fit the live recording of the symphony performance, was featured in the 2002 Sundance Film Festival. Decasia synaesthetically elucidates subtleties inherent to myriad generative tensions: progress/tradition, memory/time, darkness/illumination, and mini-malism/totalism.

Unique Shopper Marketing Solutions Target Consumers at Key Moments of
Receptivity, Boosting ROI

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — PromoWorks®, the nation’s leading provider of
direct-to-consumer product sampling and shopper engagement events, and
House Party™, the leader in in-home-and-digital marketing
programs, today announced they have formed a strategic partnership to
provide offerings for brand marketers that link in-store sampling and
in-home marketing via completely new customized programs.

“The real power of this partnership is that marketers can for the first
time link these two critical moments of increasingly rare consumer
receptivity—when consumers are trying products in the homes of their
families and friends, and when they’re sampling and making purchase
decisions in-store,” commented Kitty Kolding, CEO of House Party. “This
link is revolutionary, and will dramatically improve marketers’
cost-effectiveness and results.”

Marketers can now close the home – store loop: they can engage hundreds
of thousands of highly targeted, opted-in, influential consumers with
product samples and compelling offers in their homes through a national
House Party event; and they can drive purchase at retail via the
in-store shopper engagement and sampling events of PromoWorks. The
combination of these two potent marketing approaches will deliver the
proven results that each already achieves – and more. And every step in
the loop will be thoroughly measured and reported.

“Activating targeted consumers through the in-home party experience, and
then converting those leads to an in-store purchase, while monitoring
performance all along the way, will give marketers a highly targeted
direct connection to their consumers and a better program ROI than ever
before,” said John Stermer, EVP Sales and Marketing for PromoWorks.

Im 29 and going on my fifth year of dedicated training. I picked up MF when I first started lifting, and thanks to your tips Ive added muscle and shed fat. Ive elevated my lifts to a max 550-pound squat, 535-pound deadlift and 365-pound bench. Thanks for guiding me in the right direction.
Almost every gym offers some form of boot-camp training, and while you might think these workouts are good for only soccer moms and fat dudes, they can be an effective adjunct to your weight-training program. University of Wisconsin-La Crosse researchers reported to the American Council on Exercise that the typical boot-camp workout, which uses calisthenic-style exercises, burns about 300 calories in 30 minutes.
Im proof that a person can lift weights and be able to run 10 miles, but without knowing how to follow a proper diet and training principles can still look fat and out of shape. About I 1/2 years ago I benched more than I do now, but today I not only look better but also feel better. Because of MF, I have tons of workout routines with which to hit every muscle fiber, and Ive taken your advice on nutrition and cardio. Thanks to your whole team.

3PAR® (NYSE: PAR), the leading global provider of utility storage , announced today that AudienceScience has reduced its storage total cost of ownership (TCO) by nearly 50% as a result of deploying 3PAR Utility Storage in its VMware vSphere™ environment. By replacing legacy storage with the 3PAR InServ® T-Class Storage Server , AudienceScience reduced the amount of storage capacity required to support server virtualization by 83%. In addition, AudienceScience anticipates a 44% reduction in storage TCO over the next three years based on several factors, including a 50% reduction in storage footprint and power requirements, a 10X performance increase for block- and file-based applications, and a 78% increase in storage capacity utilization with 3PAR Utility Storage.

“As the leading provider of online audience-targeted advertising, our company continues to experience tremendous growth. As we began developing our plans for supporting significant capacity in the coming months, we looked at the price of maintaining our existing storage over the next three years and determined that, for the same cost, we could purchase the 3PAR T-Class array outright,” said Brandon Mason VP of Technology at AudienceScience. “This combined savings, coupled with technical benefits such as high availability and increased performance, made the move an easy decision.”

Since deploying 3PAR, AudienceScience has enjoyed 100% storage uptime. Due to the performance and reliability of the InServ T-Class, AudienceScience has increased virtual machine (VM) density per physical server, retired racks of existing servers used for testing, and collapsed physical servers used for vSphere onto a single blade enclosure for significant space and power savings. The market researcher even has the headroom to double the raw storage capacity of its 3PAR array without increasing its datacenter floor space footprint.

With 3PAR Thin Provisioning software, AudienceScience has dramatically reduced storage capacity requirements, since physical capacity is now allocated on an as-needed basis and is only consumed when vSphere writes to a thin provisioned storage volume. 3PAR Thin Provisioning has not only enabled AudienceScience to eliminate wasted space when presenting storage to ESX hosts, but net usable space has more than doubled as utilization has gone from 50% with legacy storage to 89% with 3PAR.

3PAR Dynamic Optimization, combined with 3PAR Thin Provisioning, has yielded a 78% increase in storage capacity utilization for AudienceScience. By using Dynamic Optimization to dynamically and nondisruptively convert Fast RAID 5 (3 1) volumes to Fast RAID 5 (5 1) volumes, AudienceScience saved 22% on capacity alone. By implementing file services using the 3PAR array for backend storage, AudienceSciences storage environment — which uses only cost-efficient SATA drives — now supports both block- and file-based storage and delivers better performance to applications than its previous environment.

“T3 Motion is proud to have been selected to provide our clean-energy T3 i-Series ESVs for critical public safety roles in this dynamic part of the world. We look forward to assisting these agencies in achieving their world-class commitment to public safety and clean technology,” said T3 Motion CEO, Ki Nam. “Our strategic business plan for 2010 includes a strong focus on continued expansion in the Middle East region to provide clean-energy security solutions.”

In Qatar, the T3 i-Series has been selected by the countrys Ministry of the Interior for a wide range of public safety applications including military, police and rescue. The vehicles were featured prominently in the recent National Day Parade.

The “green technology” T3 i-Series vehicles are being deployed by the Al Fazaa Police and Al Khwiyah Forces as well as the Emiri Guard in Doha. The Al Fazaa Police plan to utilize the clean-energy T3 i-Series vehicles to patrol the Emirs Palaces, the Corniche, the Center of Qatar, and a selection of public areas and parks. The sizeable, multi-unit order continues T3 Motions growth in the Gulf Cooperation Council (G.C.C.) region comprised of Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

In Abu Dhabi, the Al Ain Community Policing Branch has deployed the T3 i-Series at Mabzarah Park and the City Center. Additional deployments include vehicles with special specifications at Al Khaleej Al Arabi Corniche, Khalidia and public parks in the capital.

Nexenta Systems Provides In-line Deduplication for Primary and
Virtualized Storage, and Adds Microsoft Hyper-V Support

HANNOVER, Germany — Nexenta Systems, the leader in Open Storage solutions, today introduced
NexentaStor™ 3.0, a significant upgrade to the company’s
enterprise class storage solution based on the file system ZFS, and
Virtual Machine Datacenter (VMDC) 3.0, a significant new release of its
virtualization management platform. The new version of NexentaStor is
the first commercial storage solution to incorporate ZFS-based in-line
deduplication, a giant leap forward for the storage industry.
NexentaStor 3.0 also includes support for Microsoft Hyper-V, making it
the only storage solution to support all major virtualization
environments. With this announcement, NexentaStor continues to build on
its position as the superior alternative to expensive, monolithic and
proprietary storage technologies.

Data deduplication has emerged as the most important storage innovation
in the last five years. According to a December 2009 TechTarget survey,
60 percent of enterprises view primary storage deduplication as their
most important disk-related initiative in 2010. EMC’s 2009 acquisition
of deduplication vendor Data Domain for over $2 billion further
underscores the critical role of this technology. The rise of server
virtualization has provided greater impetus to deduplication since
virtual machines, and their associated storage, can consume a
significant amount of high-performance, expensive primary storage. Until
now, however, deduplication technology has been available only at a high
price from vendors who have built proprietary, siloed solutions that
impact only secondary data – either disk-based backup and replication or
archiving and compliance. As a result, an organization can have multiple
deduplication approaches – and data stores – that do not work with each
other, thereby dramatically increasing costs.

NexentaStor 3.0 revolutionizes storage by providing deduplication for
primary (production) storage. This functionality enables customers to
reduce their use of expensive and scarce primary storage. NexentaStor
3.0 exceeds the functionality of legacy deduplication by offering
bi-directional replication with compression and deduplication, superior
end-to-end data integrity, accelerated I/O through the native use of
SSDs, and hardware accelerators leveraged by the revolutionary ZFS file
system.

All the above listed capabilities are leveraged to their fullest in the
Nexenta Virtual Machine Datacenter (VMDC) 3.0 release based on
NexentaStor 3.0. With its new support for Microsoft Hyper-V, NexentaStor
is the only product to support VMware, Citrix Xen and Hyper-V
virtualization platforms from a single point within one unified
environment, VMDC. VMDC allows storage administrators to see their
entire virtual environment and to provision storage and storage policies
including backup, replication and retention policies from a simple point
and click interface.

Data hold the key to low readmit rates As a first step toward decreasing readmission rates, examine your data, says Margaret VanAmringe, MPH, vice president of public policy and government relations in the Washington, DC, office of The Joint Commission. “Look at readmissions and discern whether there are opportunities to reduce the number,” she advises. “That will, of course, depend on disease category, population, age, and many different factors.” It will behoove you “to really analyze readmissions, assess these data, use a random sample of charts, and look to see if there is a certain group of patients in these three areas where you feel there could be the potential to prevent readmissions,” VanAmringe says. Michael C. Choo, MD, MBA, FACEP, FAAEM, ACHE, president and CEO of Clinton Memorial Hospital in Wilmington, OH, says, “Its always been very important to evaluate the data on a monthly basis and find solutions.” Choo, who served for 10 years as the ED medical director at Dayton Heart Hospital, is bringing what he learned there to his new position. “Congestive heart failure is the most difficult of the three because its especially problematic in [the Medicare] population,” he says. “Initiatives weve used include trying to identify at the time of discharge those patients who need extra support at home or additional education.” For those patients who are identified as high-risk, arrangements are made for intense home health care followed by outpatient therapy sessions, he says. His current health system has congestive heart failure clinics, where patients status is monitored to make sure they stay stable and dont return to the ED or the hospital, he says.
IHI program building foundation for more quality-conscious providers Open School med students are initiating their own QI programs The goal of the school, she says, is “to advance health care improvement and safety competencies in the next generation. Its an attempt to address the fact that many academic organizations were teaching improvement and safety in a very limited capacity — some not at all — so we wanted to bring it directly to students.” The schools offerings, she explains, “vary from what feel like formal courses to case studies, video clips on YouTube, discussion boards, and journal articles.” Probably the development the IHI found most interesting, she continues, “is that while the program was initially targeted at students, weve also found a large number of faculty members showing interest. They view the content and integrate it with their course curriculum and share it with other faculty so the knowledge can be spread.”

SALT LAKE CITY — Two key health care reform proposals in the Legislature were approved Friday by senators. HCR8, which tells Congress to let Utah play by its own rules as it renovates health care in the state, has already passed the House, 23-4, and awaits the governors signature. A few veteran senators, including Senate President Michael Waddoups, R-Taylorsville, voiced concerns that it includes what is basically a government-appointed risk pool adjuster board as part of the coming insurance marketplace. That new insurance market combines traditional plans through the workplace and a more benefit- tailored, privately purchased option through the Web-based health care exchange, now in the second year of a trial run. Instead of just saying “yes” or “no” to whatever an employers plan is, a working family would be permitted to shop for and use the premium paid by the employer to help pay for a plan they believe is more suited to their familys health care needs.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California Attorney General Jerry Brown subpoenaed financial records from the states seven largest health insurance companies Thursday, saying hes concerned companies are unjustly raising premiums. The subpoenas include Anthem Blue Cross, the states largest for- profit health insurer, which has come under fire recently for a proposed rate hike of up to 39 percent. “Not only are the rate increases devastating to Californians strapped by the economy, but in some cases, they are possibly illegal,” Brown said in a statement. The subpoenas cover fee-for-service health plans that reimburse doctors and hospitals for each service performed. Last month, Browns office issued subpoenas to the same seven companies regarding their managed care plans, known as HMOs.

“The excessive cost, the delay in delivering optimal care, and the unnecessary exposure to radiation can all be avoided through responsible use of highly dependable and secure technology,” said Hamid Tabatabaie, president and chief executive officer, lifeIMAGE. “We designed TIME to help trauma teams be better prepared for the arriving patient, and avoid the cost and wasted time associated with a repeat exam. Most importantly, however, we designed TIME so referring institutions do not require anything other than an Internet connection and the will to practice good medicine.”

“Severely injured patients are routinely referred to trauma centers after receiving initial treatment and imaging exams at a referring institution. These patients arrive at the trauma center with CD or film copies of their exams, though sometimes in the haste to transfer critically ill patients the images do not make the trip. Image data on CD is sometimes hard to view at the receiving center, or is not viewable at optimal resolution,” said Dr. Frederick Millham, chairman, Massachusetts State Trauma Committee and chairman, department of surgery, Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton, Massachusetts, who has reviewed a demonstration of the lifeIMAGE TIME system.

Barbara enjoyed canoeing on the Minnesota lakes, as well as ice skating in winter. Playing tennis was a great hobby. She and her husband were in Minnesota about seven years. (1937-1943). In 1944 they were advised that Utah was expanding their medical school from a two year to a four year program. So they moved to Salt Lake City where her husband was appointed as chairman of the bio chemistry department and Barbara worked in the laboratory with him. Utah was very different from Minnesota, and they enjoyed the mountains very much. They met some very good friends there including Joy Hashimoto, Marjorie Riches-Gunn and Alida Tyler, whose husbands also worked at the medical school. Barbara also taught English to foreign students of the Guadalupe Center. She spent many years volunteering at the V.A. Hospital.

Q Can you clarify the legal liability a hospital has if the courier from the facility picking up specimens at a non-hospital-owned physician practice is asked to process and package specimens prior to transporting them to the hospital lab for testing? What is the liability if the courier (also a registered phlebotomist) is asked to collect a specimen on a patient at the physicians office? Determining the potential legal consequences from a mistake first requires an assessment of what is at stake. In the case of processing, a specimen can be mislabeled–meaning the results could go to the wrong person. The patient with the problem may suffer a delay in diagnosis, and the patient who receives the wrong results may be needlessly distressed. Both can be the basis for a lawsuit if it can be proved that the mistake was the result of negligence. As for performing venipuncture, the liability is the same as if it were being done in the hospital. The most serious persistent complication of venipuncture is nerve damage, which can result from direct trauma or from nerve compression as a result of hematoma at the site of the draw. Either can result in persistent pain, numbness, or tingling in the affected area. Syncope, convulsions, and, very rarely, cardiac arhythmias can also occur. Minor complications such as local bruising are relatively common (10% to 12%). Serious complications occur with much less frequency (1% to 3%) but can present significant liability if not properly managed. The phlebotomist must be prepared to deal with potential complications, and the drawing area must be one that minimizes the risk of secondary injury, such as trauma from a fall resulting from syncope. The phlebotomist must also be sufficiently familiar with the layout of the area to access any supplies or medical equipment needed to quickly and easily manage complications.
In the early 1990s, healthcare facilities across the country rushed to embrace a new staffing experiment called decentralized phlebotomy. The trend to dissolve the phlebotomy staff and reassign them as patient care technicians (PCTs) or a similar appellation was gaining such a foothold in the industry that one prognosticating author went so far as to suggest “the phlebotomist now faces extinction,” and predict that by 2010 all venipunctures would be “performed by a team of patient care technicians.” (1), (2) What was I thinking? Here we are on the cusp of 2010, and not only is the phlebotomy profession not extinct, it is alive, well, and flexing its biceps. For many facilities drawn to decentralized phlebotomy Gold-Rush style, the promises did not pan out. Perceived benefits included a more efficient workforce and higher patient-satisfaction scores due to fewer individuals interacting with the patient. Instead, it delivered contaminated blood cultures, misidentified samples, skyrocketing specimen-rejection rates, friction between the laboratory and nursing staff, and patient dissatisfaction due to multiple venipuncture attempts and excessive bruising. Most who tried the decentralized phlebotomy concept ultimately found it to be vastly more difficult to implement than perceived and returned blood-collection responsibilities to the tried-and-true laboratory-based phlebotomist. But has decentralized phlebotomy run its course? A recent online survey administered by the Center for Phlebotomy Education asked its e-newsletter subscribers if phlebotomy is centralized or decentralized in their facilities. Sixty-one percent of those responding indicated specimen collection is centralized in their facilities, whereas 39% reported a decentralized system is in place where they work.

Lentiviral vector-based vaccine achieved significant control of viral
load in monkeys

GAITHERSBURG, Md. — VIRxSYS Corporation, a privately held company developing vaccines and
RNA therapies for serious human diseases such as HIV and cardiovascular
diseases, announced results from its prophylactic HIV vaccine (VRX1023)
study in Rhesus Macaque monkeys during a presentation today at the 2010
Annual Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) in
San Francisco, CA. The study has demonstrated that the VIRXSYS vaccine,
VRX1023, is capable of achieving significant control of viral load over
the course of four months following a challenge with a highly pathogenic
simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), a virus found in non-human primates
and similar to HIV. In addition, monkeys vaccinated with VRX1023
demonstrated an improved immune response. VIRxSYS is currently preparing
an Investigational New Drug Application for the therapeutic use of their
HIV vaccine candidate in HIV infected patients.

“We are extremely encouraged by the results of this study. The
combination of strong immune responses, viral control, and CD4
preservation is tremendous. In addition, contrary to most viral vectors
currently in development, our lentiviral vector elicits nominal
anti-vector responses and therefore can be successfully
re-administered,” said Dr. Franck Lemiale, Ph.D., Director of Immunology
for VIRxSYS. “It will be very interesting to see how it performs as a
therapeutic vaccine in humans.”

“Obviously, the HIV vaccine field has been hit with a number of
disappointing trial results over the past several years,” said Dr. Joep
Lange, Head of the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and
Development, Professor of Medicine at the Academic Medical Center,
University of Amsterdam, President Emeritus of the International AIDS
Society, and member of the VIRxSYS medical advisory board for HIV. “The
results from this trial are very impressive and I believe could provide
real excitement in the world of HIV vaccines.”

VIRxSYS’ vaccine candidate differs from other HIV vaccine candidates in
that it employs an engineered HIV-based lentiviral vector to deliver the
vaccinating antigens. The study results demonstrate the VIRxSYS vaccine
candidate achieves remarkably high levels of T-cell responses, resulting
in a 95% reduction of viral load in Rhesus monkeys which received
lentiviral vaccination, as compared to non-vaccinated control animals in
this study. The investigators also observed a strong and durable immune
response without the requirement of a DNA prime and a major preservation
of CD4 T cell compartment as measured by the percentage of CD4 T cells
to total lymphocytes. The lentiviral-based vaccine also elicited high
levels of CD107a expression in T cells, which have recently been
described as having an important role in the control of SIV/HIV.
Importantly, no adverse reactions have been observed in any of the
vaccinated animals following multiple infusions of the lentiviral
vaccine.

Dear Dr Cath, I FOUND lice in my boyfriends pubic hair. He says they arent crabs but head lice he caught from his job as a hairdresser. Now he has given them to me. I think hes having one-night stands and Im worried Ill get another sexually transmitted disease. PUBIC lice are different to the lice that live on the head so Im afraid your boyfriend isnt being honest by claiming he picked them up from the hair salon. You catch pubic lice by close body contact – like sex or through sharing towels or bedding.
New weapon in the fight against multi-drug resistant bacteria
published in “Science”

ALLSCHWIL, Switzerland — Today, Polyphor Ltd published the discovery of a new class of
antibiotics with a novel mode of action (Science, VOL 327, ISSUE 5968).
This proprietary new class of antibiotics is effective against
multi-drug resistant Gram-negative bacteria, opening up new treatment
options for serious and often life-threatening infections. The most
advanced drug candidate in this new class, POL7080, selectively kills
the dangerous bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

In collaboration with Prof. John Robinson at the University of Zürich,
Polyphor applied its proprietary Protein Epitope Mimetics Technology
(PEM Technology) to identify new antibiotics that either act against a
broad-spectrum of bacteria or selectively target one particular
bacterial strain. This joint research effort resulted in the discovery
of a new drug target and mechanism of action by which Gram-negative
bacteria are killed effectively.

Many Gram-negative bacteria have become multi-drug resistant in recent
years as they have developed mechanisms to escape the therapeutic
effects of current antibiotic drugs. New antibiotics against drug
resistant bacteria are thus urgently needed as the current arsenal of
drugs becomes ineffective against such resistant pathogens. However, in
the history of pharmaceutical research, the discovery of a new class of
antibiotics with a novel mechanism of action is a rare event occurring
only about once every 20 years. This reported discovery therefore
represents a major breakthrough in antibiotic research.

The leading antibiotic PEMdrug candidate POL7080 represents an important
new weapon to combat life-threatening infections with Pseudomonas
aeruginosa which frequently occur in the hospital setting or in
chronic lung infections. Polyphor is currently preparing the start of
Phase I clinical trials with POL7080 to rapidly advance the clinical
development and has initiated out-licensing negotiations with Pharma
partners.

IN SAN FRANCISCO, any gathering after 2 a.m. requires a permit if there is “live entertainment,” a category that is apparently broad enough to include spinning records. Now cops charged with breaking up these events have taken it upon themselves to expropriate laptops from renegade disc jockeys. According to accounts from local DJs, one officer makes it a habit to take every laptop he can find when raiding parties, even computers not visibly being used to play music. Jennifer Granick, a lawyer with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, says this practice undermines the “evidence in a crime” excuse for seizing the computers, many of which belong to people not charged with any crimes. One of the DJs, Justin Miller, tells a tragicomic tale of an aggressive plainclothes policeman who barged into a private Halloween party while she was in full down regalia and asked her if she had a laptop. She wasnt using it to play music, she says, hut that didnt stop him from grabbing the computer out of her hands when she took it from its bag in response to his request. Miller says she followed the cop out to his car as he put her property in his trunk, along with other laptops hed nabbed that night. Miller recalls the annoyed officer telling her hed do all he could to make sure that it took her months to get back the machine, which is her primary source of livelihood.
WITH her outrageous outfits and crazy hairstyles, Lady Gaga looks like one of a kind. But in fact the Poker Face stars style came from her friend and mentor, go-go dancing DJ and New York party fixture Lady Starlight. Before Lady Gaga rose to fame, her friend created many of her over-the-top outfits and persuaded her to parade around on stage in skimpy PVC undies and Indian headdresses. “Its crazy knowing that the biggest star in the world was inspired by me,” says Starlight – real name Colleen Martin.

Leading minibus insurance broker, Staveley Head have offered advice for minibus drivers on check to ensure their vehicle is legal for the road.

If you drive a minibus, whether as a job or a volunteer, whether part-time or full-time, you as well as the owner of the vehicle are responsible for ensuring the vehicle is in a legal and roadworthy condition. The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) roadside examiners were extended powers under the 2006 Road Safety Act to issue fixed penalties to offending drivers following random roadside inspections.

The minibus DRIVER is legally required to carry out a “walkaround check” prior to each and every journey. If stopped by a VOSA roadside inspector and a fault is found to be evident, the driver will incur a fixed penalty fine or even a court appearance for more serious offences. The inspection should include the following checks.

Make sure that windscreen wipers and washers, horn and all exterior lights are working correctly. Ensure that all mirrors and glass are clean and to not impair vision.

Test that the brakes and steering mechanism are not defective in any way, and determine that there are no fuel or oil leaks.

Motorcyclists are largely in favour of the bike scrappage scheme, according to a survey of customers by Swinton Bikes.

An online survey of 1,200 customers by Swinton Bikes, one of the UKs leading motorbike insurance brokers, found that almost 50% would be encouraged to buy a new motorbike if the scrappage scheme were to be put in place.

With sales of motorcycles dipping in 2009, the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI) has called for measures to boost bike purchases, following the success of the car scrappage scheme.

According to reports, a total of 111,513 motorcycles, scooters and mopeds were sold in the UK last year – 20% fewer than in 2008.

The MCI is calling for local authorities, transport planners and the Government to view motorcycling as an alternative to the use of cars and public transport.

The Department for Work and Pensions is considering setting up a new Employers Liability Insurance Bureau, which will trace EL policies and, where they cannot be traced, provide an insurance fund of last resort. The Employers Liability Insurance Bill has now had its second reading in the House of Commons.

The proposal has caused concerns among insurers that the bureau may have a negative effect, as some employers may feel less obliged to make adequate health and safety provisions for their employees.

A spokesperson for leading insurance broker Flint Insurance commented: “We are concerned about the effect that a dedicated Employers Liability Insurance Bureau will have on the attitudes of some employers who may then decide not to take the health and safety of their employees seriously. However, setting up a tracing system could help thousands of employees receive the compensation they deserve.”

The ABI has stated its opposition to the scheme on these grounds, fearing that it could cause a “serious moral hazard.” There are also objections on the grounds of fairness; the fund is to be financed by the insurance industry, which would mean that reputable firms would have to pay for the failings of others. However, the ABI recognises the usefulness of a system for tracing insurers, pointing out that in fact it introduced such a code 10 years ago. The TUC has welcomed the principle of a system to assist those whose original insurers cannot be found, such as asbestos victims.

Flint Insurance are an independent broker specialising in a range of commercial insurance such as public liability insurance . Based in Harrow, Middlesex, they have now expanded their workforce to include an office in Sidcup, Kent. Flint have over 30 years experience of offering both personal and commercial cover across the UK, working with a panel of over 35 insurers to provide the most appropriate cover for their clients.

Quality Check measures added by Joint Commission Quality Check displays data on National Quality Improvement Goals for hospitals on selected performance measures in six treatment areas: childrens asthma care, heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, pregnancy, surgical care, and pregnancy. The EDs performance in all of these areas becomes part of the hospitals data submission to Quality Check. That information then can be accessed by consumers as part of their search for hospital care. Bruce S. Auerbach, MD, FACEP, vice president and chief, emergency and ambulatory services at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, MA, says, “Once a person has been admitted to the hospital, the ED really has no further involvement in what goes on while in theyre in the hospital or upon discharge.” However, he notes, “Some EDs have instituted programs that process or provide more care in the ED or through which patients are overseen in adjacent areas — like observation or clinical decision units — as a means to manage those individuals they think they can take care of within a 24-hour-period and not admit them.” These patients, he continues, will be discharged from the ED or the other units, in which case the ED staff that oversee that unit will provide discharge instructions, he says. In addition, he notes, some institutions will put case managers in the ED. “Because they have so much to do with discharge planning, they will use them in the ED even for patients who are being admitted since they can start work early on discharge planning so that when theyre discharged there are no obstacles in the way of going home,” Auerbach explains.
Inside Obamas Brain, by Sasha Abramsky, Portfblio, 278 pages, $24.95 DECEMBER 2009 may go down as the single most consequential month in Barack Obamas presidency. Starting with his announcement of a troop escalation in Afghanistan, through a Nobel Peace Prize speech in which he touted the benefits of war, then an international climate change conference that broke down in disarray, topped by a convulsive national health care debate that nevertheless staggered toward the legislative finish line by Christmas, the president at every impactful step encountered something new in his meteoric young political career: sustained and even vicious criticism from his core fan base on the left. After the Afghan announcement, 60s New Left relic Tom Hayden declared in The Nation that “its time to strip the Obama sticker off my car” At Open Left, Paul Rosenberg characterized the presidents Oslo performance as a “War-is-Peace Prize speech “When the Copenhagen climate talks broke down (for more on which see “Climate Crackup/ page 28), anti-globalization author Naomi Klein concluded in The Guardian that the “failure belongs to Obama” And by the time the 2,457-page health care overhaul made it through the Senate, a whos who list of progressives–including former Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean and netroots impresario Markos Moulitsas–were actively campaigning against it. Yet even with the noisy dissent on his left flank and record-setting disapproval ratings from the public at large, the president kept getting stuff done, not least of which appears to be the single largest entitlement expansion since the 1960s. The busy month of December also saw passage of an omnibus spending bill and subsequent Pentagon package that together helped jack up federal outlays by more than 10 percent over the previous year amid only scattered national discussion. The House of Representatives passed a massive financial regulation overhaul that would create a Consumer Financial Protection Agency, the national debt ceiling was raised once again, and the Obama has governed like the most stereotypical of old-school economic progressives. As ever, nonideology turns out to be ideological after all. Environmental Protection Agency took the potentially monumental step of regulating carbon (see “The EPAs Carbon Footprint,” page 36). For a guy who seems perpetually on the verge of losing his political mojo, Obama manages to accomplish quite a bit.

WOODBRIDGE, N.J. — A man who snatched his infant daughter from the arms of her maternal grandmother while the childs mother was in court getting a restraining order against him told police he threw the baby off a bridge and into a frigid New Jersey river, prompting a massive search Wednesday beneath a busy parkway. Search teams, including boats, dogs and helicopters, scoured the area beneath the Garden State Parkways Driscoll Bridge in central New Jersey for any signs of 3-month-old Zara Malani-lin Abdur. Acting New Jersey Attorney General Paula Dow called the incident “an example of a horrific case of domestic violence.” Authorities say the girls father, 21-year-old Shamsiddi Abdur- Raheem of Galloway Township, allegedly forced his way into the grandmothers East Orange apartment around 4 p.m. Tuesday, striking her in the face, choking her and forcibly taking the baby before fleeing in his vehicle. The 60-year-old grandmother, whom police declined to identify, chased after Abdur-Raheem and was struck when she tried to stop him by throwing herself in the path of his van. She was treated for her injuries at a local hospital and released. Abdur-Raheem was arrested four hours after the abduction in southern New Jersey, and allegedly confessed to police that he had tossed the child from the bridge.

Essentials of Foreign Exchange Trading By James Chen John Wiley . Sons, Inc. $39.95; 221 pages Author James Chen states upfront that the contents of “Essentials of Foreign Exchange Trading” are not meant to be an exhaustive tome that covers all aspects of forex trading. He succeeded on that score, but he went too far to the other end of the pendulum by covering all topics very briefly without sufficient detail. The end result is a very basic hook on FX trading suitable for novices with no knowledge or experience. The book is written in a simple to read style. Chen writes clearly and his writing is easy to understand. Each chapter follows in a logical and organized fashion and the charts are large and easy to read. The book begins with a brief history and description of FX trading and covers the major players. The author then reviews the mechanics of FX trading by reviewing currency pairs, types of orders, margin calls, lot size, leverage, commissions, interest and hedging. One chapter is devoted to technical analysis, which the author claims is a “comprehensive discussion of technical analysis as it is applied to foreign exchange trading.” That claim is way off the mark. First, the discussion of over a dozen common technical indicators and basic chart patterns – candlesticks, pointand-figure – cannot possibly be comprehensive in 50 pages. Second, there was only a mild tie-in to FX trading. The discussion could easily have been about trading equities and nothing would have been lost in translation regarding technical analysis. None of the chart examples showed real charts or any time frame. They just illustrated a particular point about a trend line or support or resistance or whatever was being discussed. Real charts over specific time frames with an explanation of the meaning of the indicators and patterns would have been much more educational in all respects. The book also focuses on fundamental analysis, and the author spends many pages reviewing 1 3 basic key economic indicators of the U.S. dollar such as GDP (Gross Domestic Product), the employment situation summary, retail sales, Consumer Price Index and several more. However, there is no explanation of how the FX trader can use this information to become an astute trader. There also is a brief discussion of carry traders and global interest rates. The author makes an interesting closing statement at the end of that chapter: “The more a trader learns about fundamental market drivers, the better the trader will be prepared for the often unpredictable nature of the foreign exchange markets.” I dont see how anyone can be prepared for unpredictable markets no matter what knowledge they have. Thats what Black Swans are all about.
Detecting a trend is an important part of predicting direction in a currency pair. Tomorrows prices usually follow or continue todays trend. There will, of course, be reversals and ranging behavior within the trend but it is easier to trade with a known trend than to predict when it changes. The task of the forex trader is to detect variations or waves of sentiment. The trader needs to ask: is there a shape to changes in sentiment and can it be detected? To answer this question, we can turn to price break charts (also called three-line break charts). In recent months, Bloomberg Professional stations added these charts. They also are available in many retail charting programs such as eSignal and ProRealTime. Price break charts show only a new high close or a new low close. For example, if a trader using a candlestick chart of a daytime interval converts it to a three-line price break chart, he would see the price action from a different vantage point. The price break chart would only show consecutive new day high closes, or consecutive new day low closes. If no new high or new low is reached, then no additional bar would appear. But when the price reverses, it shows a new column only if the price reverses three previous highs (downward reversal) or three previous lows (see “Call me when it happens”). This is why it is called a three-line break chart. The conditions for a bullish and bearish reversal are easily identified. Three-line break charts enable significant insights into the shape of sentiment in the price action. A trader can derect the prevailing sentiment, how strong it is, whether a change in sentiment has occurred and project where the next trend reversal will occur. Several examples of using the three-line break as an indicator occurred in the GBP/ USD pair in 2009 (see “Show me the move”). The year started with a series of three consecutive new lows. It then reversed to a distance of four new consecutive highs. The sequence reversed back to four new consecutive lows followed by three consecutive new highs. In April, we see a very significant sentiment event, a flip-flop. This is a new downward reversal followed immediately by an upward reversal. In other words, market sentiment did not continue into a series. When a flip-flop occurs, it is rarely followed by another immediate reversal and therefore is a signal that the trend direction after the flip-flop will continue for a longer distance. This is exactly what occurred. The GBP/ USD flipped from a low of 1.4252 on March 30 to a high of 1.5002 on April 15. Also in the pound, we see a long sequence of 20 new consecutive day highs that occurred between May 1 and June 11, taking it from 1.4490 to 1.6598. While the ultimate length of the sequence is not predicable, what was clear tei the trader was that the previous highest uptrend sequence before the long run up was five new consecutive highs. When a previous sequence of highs or lows is broken by a new sequence, this is an alert that the sentiment is becoming stronger than ever.

CHICAGO — Global business insurer CNA recently announced its implementation of
CargoNet™, a database network that combats cargo theft through improved
sharing of cargo theft information between the industry and law
enforcement. As a charter member of CargoNet, CNA leads the insurance
industry in a national initiative centered on secure information
sharing, education/training, and loss prevention services, as well as
investigative support.

Cargo theft is a multibillion-dollar economic drain that exploits
existing gaps in the nation’s information-sharing framework. When theft
victims are unable to provide timely and accurate information concerning
their losses, law enforcement’s ability to conduct effective
investigations is hampered. In addition to the immediate loss of
merchandise, cargo theft affects insurers and their policyholders
through added costs that are ultimately passed along to consumers.

“It’s universally agreed that better data collection and sharing are
critical to combating cargo theft,” said David Shillingford, president
of CargoNet. “We would not have been able to build the system needed to
achieve this without the support of forward-looking insurers like CNA.”

The CargoNet database and information-sharing system were designed by a
group of law enforcement, insurance industry, and supply-chain experts
and is managed by ISO. Investigations support and law enforcement
liaisons are coordinated by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB).

AgencyPortal improves agent satisfaction and increases new business
for Harford Mutual

BOSTON — AgencyPort (a Sword Group company), the leading provider of web-based
solutions to the property and casualty insurance industry, today
congratulated Harford Mutual, a regional provider of PC insurance, on
being recognized by leading industry analysts Celent as a Model Carrier
for its innovative application of web portal technology. Harford Mutual
sought to increase independent agent adoption of its online portal, and
by partnering with AgencyPort, Harford Mutual saw growth in its new
business premium and agent utilization of the system to nearly 80%.

Harford Mutual also sought to modernize its insurance policy rating
engine from the existing processes to a more service-oriented
architecture; a project they knew would have far-reaching impact within
its back office operations. In order to shield its 400 independent
agencies from this internal systems upgrade and to simultaneously
install a new agent portal to improve agents’ experience with them,
Harford Mutual chose AgencyPorts web-based solution, AgencyPortal.

“We’re honored by this prestigious recognition from Celent,” said
Michael K. Winn, of Harford Mutual who led the launch of the portal. “In
selecting a software product for our agent front-end, it was imperative
that the solution integrate with our vendor-bought rating engine and our
existing policy administration system. We selected AgencyPort’s
AgencyPortal solution as the foundation for our RapidWrite product,
because it offered proven connector architecture and because AgencyPort
has a proven track record of project teams working effectively with
other vendors.”

“Harford Mutual’s agents have enthusiastically embraced the new
RapidWrite agent portal—most often citing faster service time as the
main improvement,” said Mason Power, Vice President of Product Marketing
AgencyPort. “The results speak for themselves: Business Owners Policy
applications were up over 20%, Workers’ Compensation up over 15%, and
Commercial Automobile up a staggering 54% in 2009. Harford Mutual has
also seen a major increase in quote-to-bind ratios across all three
Lines of Business meaning the company is growing its book of business as
a result of its technology investment.”

businesses,” said RW Capital founding partner Ellery
W. Roberts. “For many small ventures, the only obstacle to recovery
and growth is access to capital. RW Capital is strongly positioned to
provide much-needed expansion capital to growing companies and to offer
a unique opportunity for our investors and partners.”

“The current economic crisis has left too few lenders focused on lower
middle market businesses,” said founding partner Michael
W. Wingard. “RW Capital Partners will fill an overwhelming need for
capital that can drive acquisitions, fuel growth and create jobs. If SBA
licensing is approved, our limited partners’ investments would be
matched by committed capital that will allow us to pursue a wide range
of opportunities and realize significant returns.”

IRVINE, Calif. — After multiple revisions and dismal closings, the Hope for Homeowners
(H4H) program has a new life. Banker’s
Portfolio, LLC has secured a forward commitment for the purchase of
the H4H securities and is rolling out the H4H product to existing

Award recognizes the growing importance of storage for video
surveillance

PALO ALTO, Calif. — Pivot3 has been awarded the 2010 North American Video Surveillance
Storage Growth Leadership Award from Frost Sullivan. This honor
demonstrates Pivot3’s strength in the external storage market for
surveillance with its award-winning Pivot3 Serverless Computing™ product
line.

The Excellence Awards are presented annually to companies that are
predicted to encourage significant growth in their respective
industries, have identified emerging trends before they became the
standard in the marketplace, and have created advanced technologies that
will catalyze industries in the near future.

“The key drivers for Pivot3’s outstanding performance in 2009 include
the company’s solution, which is revolutionary in video surveillance,
and effective marketing of its solutions in key end user segments,” said
Dilip Sarangan, research analyst, Frost Sullivan North America. “The
company competes directly with some of the largest companies in the
world, including IBM, EMC, Hewlett-Packard and Dell. In order to
effectively compete with these large organizations, Pivot3 has worked
diligently to focus on key points of superior performance, lower costs,
elimination of hardware and high availability.”

Pivot3’s unique architecture is ideally suited for the surveillance
market, which requires high capacity, high availability and a quick
return-on-investment as users need to store video from hundreds, if not
thousands, of cameras. Since its inception, Pivot3 has continued to
build upon its market share and tripled revenues in 2009.

ICOP Digital, Inc. (NASDAQ: ICOP), an
industry-leading company engaged in advancing digital surveillance technology solutions,
today announced that the first installations of “on-premises” (self-hosted)
versions of ICOP LIVE™ in the
U.S. and abroad have been successfully completed (following installations
of
ICOP-hosted versions of ICOP LIVE), thereby showing the flexibility in
their live streaming product.

The Company was notified by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in
December 2009 that they were allowed a patent for the system and method
used by ICOP LIVE.

ICOP LIVE delivers live streaming audio and video to and from a first
responder vehicle over wireless networks, including cellular networks, mesh
networks, etc. For example, ICOP
LIVE can stream video/audio from the ICOP Model 20/20-W to police
headquarters, personnel on the scene, and to web-enabled mobile devices,
such as smart phones and PDAs in the field.

An “on-premises” (self-hosted) installation of ICOP LIVE allows an agency
to install and maintain the product on their own server equipment, totally
managing the video/audio streams internally at the agency. Alternatively,
ICOP also offers agencies the option for an ICOP-hosted ICOP LIVE product,
in which ICOP manages the entire live streaming product, servers, and
video/audio streams.

“Our live streaming patent gives us an important strategic advantage in the
marketplace. ICOP LIVE is of growing importance as law enforcement highly
values real-time situational
awareness in facilitating decisions in critical situations,” said Dave
Owen, Chief Executive Officer at ICOP.

If that shortness of breath you feel comes only in response to a Valentines Day interlude, chock it up to romance. But if its a regular occurrence, a visit to the doctor may be in order. Symptoms of heart failure are different from those that precede a heart attack, Neider said. “Difficulty breathing or being short of breath are two symptoms of heart failure, along with chest pain or discomfort, swelling in the legs and/or feet and being light-headed or dizzy.” A heart attack can lead to heart failure, which results from a structural or functional cardiac disorder that impairs the hearts ability to fill with or pump a sufficient volume of blood and precipitates the symptoms listed above. More than 5 million Americans have some form of heart failure, and 550,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. The disorder is associated with more than 1 million hospitalizations annually and is the leading cause of hospitalizations for people over 65.
Shared sacrifice On Feb. 3, a Times editorial advocated cutting the pay of all state employees by 5 percent. Isnt a 5 percent salary reduction the same as a 5 percent income tax? In your editorial you also write, “That means everyone is going to have to make more sacrifices.” If you truly advocate shared sacrifice why are you singling out only one employment sector? Why not advocate a sales tax or income tax increase so that it impacts all Californians equally? Why are so many of us so quick to advocate cutting someone elses compensation as long as our own pay is not affected? Where has our sense of civic responsibility gone? How can we hope to pull ourselves out the current crisis without a shared willingness to sacrifice?
Robert Scott Robert Scott Fulkerson, 36, of Lexington, South Carolina, beloved husband of Mikelene Oliveira Fulkerson, passed away on Friday, February 5, 2010.

SANTA ROSA — Bail has been set at $2.1 million for a man suspected of holding a woman captive in a mobile home park just outside of Santa Rosa, beating and sexually assaulting her over the course of three days. Sonoma County sheriffs deputies headed to Western Mobile Home Park at 3309 Santa Rosa Ave., in an unincorporated area southeast of Santa Rosa, at about 9:30 a.m. Friday after someone called to report receiving a call from a woman who said she needed help. Inside the trailer, they found a 40-year-old woman tethered at the ankle to the bedroom floor. She was injured and pleaded with the deputies to rescue her. The woman was released from the tether and treated for various injuries. She told the deputies she had been tied up for three days, beaten with objects and sexually assaulted, according to the sheriffs office.
LAYTON — The sign affixed to the metal and plastic partition that separates Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Lisa Steed from the people she arrests is sobering. From the sign, Jaqueline “Jacqui” Saburido stares mutely at arrestees. A black hat covers her bald, burned head. Scar tissue stretches tautly across the socket where her left eye should be. Her nose is melted away. Steed is committed to preventing what happened to Saburido from happening to others by taking as many impaired drivers as possible off Utahs road. For 2009 alone — her first year assigned to the highway patrols DUI squad — she is credited with whats believed to be a state-record 400 DUI arrests. By comparison, the next closest trooper on the squad made 168 arrests.
A woman with warrants for her arrest led authorities on a high- speed chase Sunday night from San Jose to San Francisco, a pursuit that ended when CHP officers forced the womans car to spin out on city streets, according to law enforcement officials. The woman, who was driving an Audi sedan, was being pulled over for a traffic violation by Santa Clara County Sheriffs deputies when she fled and drove up Highway 101 at speeds between 80 to 100 mph, according to law enforcement officials. The driver, identified as Brandy Fellows, 27, was arrested on suspicion of failing to yield and suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, according to Van Eckhardt. Fellows, who had arrest warrants and parole violations, was arrested and booked into San Francisco County Jail, according to Van Eckhardt.
